been saying all week. >> we are at the very early stages of an fbi investigation. the teams from the fbi reached libya earlier this week, and i will advise congress also that i am launching an accountability review board that will be chaired by ambassador thomas pickerring. >> clearly a terrorist attack. but exactly who perpetrated it is the question. >> we went through a very exhaust i have effort to try to take those prisoners at gitmo and to rehabilitate them. but we have seen instances, both in iraq and afghanistan, and for that matter pakistan, where former detain s have been involved in planning and executing attacks against americans abroad. >> on the issue of -- with libya today, it is stunning the lack of coordination between the intelligence community and the state department. >> what do we know? we know it was a terror attack. it was planned two or three days in advance. we knew it had nothing to do with the video. we know our ambassador was tortured now before he was killed. >> what we do know is that the natural protests that arose because of the outrage over the vid
they have nothing knew to report that. and we're told the f.b.i. team to come in to investigate the killing remains here in tripoli. according to all reports they have not reached benghazi amidst new concerns in tampering with the crime scene in benghazi and new concerns that the bad guys might be getting away. this militia crackdown means that the militants, possible suspects are being forced out of their bases maybe to parts unknown. back to you. >> gregg: thank you very much. >>> now to pakistan where anti-american demonstrateders are taking to the streets yet again. the peaceful crowd chanting and holding signs reading down with america and israel. there were no reports of violence, but this comes after days of riots and dozens of people killed and clashes with police around the country. >> gregg: in nigeria, a bomber killing two people and injuring dozens more. his target was a mosque but a gate stopped him from actually causing more death and destruction. witnesses say the car bomber slammed his car into the fence and then detonated his explosives into the parking lot. they say the tw
that are on the ground in libya. there is one u.s. navy destroyer off of the coast and another coming there, too and f.b.i. agents and as well a stepped up drone surveillance. we are talking about a terror manhunt in libya. in addition to the motivator of that film made in the u.s., it could be a complex organization to take out u.s. officials with an al-qaida link. we are looking at the video we have seen coming from the who is citing that the al-qaida number two was killed by the u.s. and called on action from the u.s.. a complex and fluid situation, back to you. >> gretchen: thank you. >> brian: how does the united states respond? former director of national intelience who worked in the worst situation . ambassador, welcome. what is our best next step first of course in libya? >> let mow say that chris stevens, we lost an exemptary diplomat. he was the kind of example of expeditionary diplomacy that characterized our hot spots . we will mourn his loss and miss him greatly. as far as the next step, we have to wait this situation out a bit and at least get past the friday prayers tomorrow and see how tha
is not a terror attack. they sent f.b.i. investigators and they think it was reaction as you know as we are talking today to that film on youtube. >> gretchen: benjamin netanyahu is talking about sunday football . do we have the clipp now? this is in steve's video bank. >> steve: yes. >> brian: realize was two on one. and i was numerically challenged. mr. 1: i was the ref there. >> brian: that was the launchh and we ran the drills. and i predicted success for the league. >> steve: i forget what the occasion was when they were here. to launch or a promotional event. >> brian: i happening the promotional event took place because we launched the league. i predicted success and one day big are than nfl. >> gretchen: does the meaning why they were here. >> steve: historical. >> brian: more jobs for people. putting people back to work. >> steve: stimulus. >> gretchen: coming up on the show, a little boy could lose his side from a di detergent pods. >> steve: 33 soldiers murdered by green on blue attacks this year alone . so how has the pentagon responded? by blaming the troops. we'll tell you
the stove pipes are down, intelligence is red teamed, the fbi now has a national security branch, staffed by 10,000 people. i mean how could it be that people were learning how to fly planes and not land. these were the kinds of things they would look out for. and as bob mueller said in open session to us, we've had 20 attempts at the last year and every one of them has been stopped. i think that's good news. so we have learned. we have a counterterrorism center that specializes now in threats to the homeland. we have a director of national intelligence to provide coordination over the 16 different intelligence agencies. no longer are they their own spheres, they're part of a network. there have been changes and we have learned hard lessons. >> how important is the killing yesterday in yemen of the second in command al qaeda's second in command, al shirry. >> that hasn't been confirmed to the best of my knowledge. i don't know whether he is dead or not. but if he is, it's certain lay positive thing. over half of the al qaeda leadership has been taken out. the problem is, that they're repl
, osama bin laden. who knows what? eric shaun is with us. eric, i know you have a lot of sources at the f.b.i. and other agencies like that. what can you tell us? >> i apologize for being out of breath 'cause i was walking down fifth avenue, which is close to our studios and i heard a jet, perhaps a 737 or a small air bus, flying low, unusually low over fifth avenue making a right. i'm not going to -- i don't have any reports on what type of plane hit the world trade center. but people looked up and it made a right toward the building. >> tragedy, it is abhorrent, it is disgusting, but i'm wondering, are these pilots, terrorists themselves? are there terrorists in the cockpit who are holding guns to a pilot's head? >> i can't imagine -- >> you can speculate completely about how this happens because ob lot of training and expertise to fly a complicated, sophisticated aircraft l it's a boeing 737 or a smaller air bus. these are not little cessnas and little pipers. so you have to wonder and raise what possibility there is with the type of scenario that was going on in the cockpit. >> our wende
into the building is on-scene to help negotiators. former fbi profiler and msnbc contributor clint van zandt joins me now to talk more about this. so, clipnt, with the family member on the scene, a big help for negotiators. correct? >> well, it really does, tolls, f thomas for a couple of reasons. probably part of the ongoing negotiations. in essence, the individual in there who may or may not be armed has probably asked for a family member to be brought there. as a hostage negotiator myself, having been there and done that, so to speak, would you do something like this if you think it's going to facilitate the negotiations. if you think it's going to bring about the safe release of everybody to include the individual who's holding the one or two people hostage up there. >> let's go over some of the facts, because right now, clint what we're getting from police is we have no reports of injuries. we do know a s.w.a.t. team has arrived. at least 20 other emergency vehicles are on the scene. again, this is happening on the 16th floor of this high-rise building, the gateway center. there was one weapo
yesterday. the f.b.i. is in libya assisting local authorities investigating what happened at that consulate and they're searching for those responsible. in indonesia and pakistan, protesters clashing with police, and elsewhere after friday prayers. muslim leaders called for calm, but the flag burning and anti-american chants continue. protesters set fire to two movie theaters and a toll booth. police responding with tear gas and batons and the security has been beefed up at embassies across the region with more -- the possibility of more protests ahead. guys. >> gretchen: rick leventhal live in jerusalem, thank you. >> eric: let me point something out. a lot of the reason why it was the movie and it has been the movie is because a couple of weeks ago at the dnc, at the convention down there, joe biden said it, i'm not sure if president obama said it or not, but it was you ared quite a few times, osama bin laden is dead and gm is alive. a lot of this protest is at least what we're reading, is in response to the victory lap that the administration is taking for killing bin laden. so if you at
and a hateful video that had nothing to do with the united states. >>reporter: the f.b.i. is still investigating exactly what happened and who was behind it. >>heather: thank you, steve, reporting for us from washington, dc. >>gregg: the investigation into this is leading to more questions than answers including whether the raid against the consulate was a spontaneous reaction or a premeditated act of violence. leland vittert is live in egypt with more. >>reporter: right now it is the u.s. government's position from the obama administration that this was a spontaneous protest at the consulate that got out of hand and turned into an attack that killed those four americans including the u.s. ambassador but we are learning new information from the libyan president in an interview, alluding that he thought there was a possibility that al qaeda or another group was behind the attacks and they were very much preplanned and premeditated pointing to a couple of points. first, it happened on 9/11, and the significance of that date cannot be overlooked. it was well coordinated, the attackers were well arm
just last friday. the fbi says adel daoud was intent on killing as many americans as possible. according to the criminal complaint, the 18-year-old from hillside illinois drove a green jeep cherokee full of what he thought was explosives to a downtown chicago nightclub and then attempted to detonate it. the teenager first came to the fbi's attention in 2011 when he sent e-mails sympathizing with bin laden, writing in one that osama wasn't crazy for wanting to destroy america. eventually court papers say daoud met with an undercover agent posing as an extremist. he picked the unnamed nightclub from google maps and allegedly told the agent he wanted the attack to be massive enough to make it in the news, like tonight. authorities say daoud was bent on terrorism, vowing repeatedly that it was in his heart. >> we're going to see more and more examples of this type of self-radicalization. this is the new wave in the terrorist threat, but it doesn't mean it's a threat that we can't deal with. >> a kid that i know, adel is an angel. he helped me -- my husband was away, and he helped
of how substantial they could be. the u.s., of course, weighing in heavily in this investigation. f.b.i. agents leading the investigation, and should be in the country in short order. what we're hearing in cairo is what we're seeing on those feeds is that there has been clashes again overnight and into the day between protesters and the police. we understand that the cordon has been pushed away from the u.s. embassies, so there is no repeat of what we saw on tuesday with individuals scales the wall around the embassy. another wall has been built on the other end of the street away from the embassy to make sure that -- well, they're going to get to one wall around the embassy, they've got to cross another wall on the other side of the street. but again, there have been clashes through the day there and we are just about look at the end of friday prayers and traditionally then is when protests begin. in yemen, the u.s. embassy was assaulted there yesterday. parts of the grounds were overrun by protesters. we have new information coming from an unnamed yemeni government official telling me
the fbi is trying to resolve is how and when they learned of the annex. glen daugherty and tyrone woods were killed there in an attack that was even better equipped and more sophisticated on the first wave. >> people on the ground have seen the fragments. the remains of the mortars and the heavy weapons that were used. >> we have made clear that there were armed assailants who used heavy weapons. >> i just don't think that people come to protest equipped with rpg's and other heavy weapons. >> president obama was first briefed about the benghazi attack about 90 minutes after it began. what has emerged since then, however, from the missed opportunities to redress the inadequate security to the deaths involved and the geopolitical ramifications of the event up to and including the shifting accounts of it put forward by the administration is the dawn of a major foreign policy scandal. one, alisyn, dave, and clayton, that will be investigated and dissected in hearings and official proceedings for years to come. back to you guys in new york. >> will it be an issue now with 45 days left before
